Meet the Bustards

            Meet the Kori Bustards, a very large bird species native to east and south Africa.  With a weight ranging from 24 to 42 pounds, these ground-dwellers are considered the heaviest flying species of birds.  As you can see by the golden tone of this image, we encountered this pair shortly after sunrise in Ngorongoro Crater.  The male is possibly lifting his tail in advance of mating.  We did not witness a full display.  The courtship display would include a puffed neck and the tail raised much higher to show of its white feathers.  Kori bustards are considered polygynous and will mate with multiple females during breeding season.  They do not stay with the female and take no part in incubating eggs or brooding or raising their offspring.  Like so many species in Africa, these bustards are listed as “Near Threatened” by the IUCN.
