Long-tailed Slyph (Aglaicercus kingi)

            Indigenous to the Ecuadorian cloud forest in the Andes Mountains, this hummingbird has one of the longest tails and shortest beaks. It's iridescent blue, green and turquoise colors are eye-catching and beautiful. On our way from the Amazon basin rainforest to Quito, we stopped for lunch at Cabañas San Isidro, a cloud forest nature preserve. From the deck, we could watch many hummingbirds flitting about. We had a guided walk in the cloud forest where we learned about the amazing diversity of this unique ecosystem.
