Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord and Saint Nino in Gaspra_184

            In the summer of 1905, Nina, the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Georgy Mikhailovich Romanov, fell ill with diphtheria. A four-year-old girl underwent surgery by German doctors from the city of Homburg (near Darmstadt). The successful operation took place on August 6 (19 n.st.). On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates one of the twelve feasts – the Transfiguration of the Lord.
Georgy Mikhailovich saw this as a real miracle, the Lord God healed a hopelessly ill child and in memory of this he decided to erect a church in his estate "Charax" – St. Nina Equal-to-the-Apostles (heavenly patroness of the eldest daughter) and the Transfiguration of the Lord (the day of the operation).
The Grand Duke also commissioned N.P. Krasnov to design the church. On the memorial day of Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, the enlightener of Georgia, on January 14, 1906, the laying of the church took place.
Designed in the style of Georgian and Armenian churches in the Caucasus – Haghpat and Gelat Cathedral. It is made of local limestone, finished in the form of piece stones, with the carving of ornamental parts from the same stone. The roof of the church is made of stone slabs laid on reinforced concrete arches. On an octagonal drum stood the dome of the temple, which was decorated with a four-pointed stone cross. According to the sketch of the artist A.Slavtsov, the famous Italian workshop of Antonio Salviati produced a mosaic image of the Savior Not Made with Hands, which was located above the main entrance.

Летом 1905 года старшая дочь Великого князя Георгия Михайловича Романова Нина, заболела дифтеритом. Четырехлетней девочке сделали операцию немецкие врачи из города Хомбурга (около Дармштадта). Успешная операция произошла 6 августа (19 н.ст). В этот день Православная Церковь празднует один из двунадесятых праздников – Преображение Господне.
Георгий Михайлович увидел в этом настоящее чудо, Господь Бог исцелил безнадежно больного дитя и в память этого он решил у себя в имении «Харакс» воздвигнуть церковь – святой равноапостольной Нине (небесной покровительнице старшей дочери) и Преображения Господня (день операции).
Проект церкви Великий князь также заказал  Н.П.Краснову. В день памяти равноапостольной Нины, просветительницы Грузии, 14 января 1906 года состоялась закладка церкви.
Проектирована в стиле грузинских и армянских церквей на Кавказе – Ахпата и Гелатского собора. Сложена из местного известняка, отделанного в виде штучных камней, с высечкой орнаментальных частей из того же камня. Крыша церкви исполнена из каменных плит, уложенных по железобетонным сводам. На восьмигранном барабане стоял купол храма, который украшал четырехконечный каменный крест. По эскизу художника А.Славцова знаменитая итальянская мастерская Антонио Сальвиати изготовила мозаичный образ Спаса Нерукотворного, который находился над центральным входом.
