Fishing - a photo on Flickriver

            A great blue heron quietly wading the shallows of the Little Muddy River in Williston, North Dakota.  I used to see a lot of these birds fishing along the shallows of lakes back in the South and their natural habitats extend from the coastline of Alaska and the interior of Canada all the way south to northern South America.  They're rather common but interesting to watch while they fish or hunt (they're liable to eat not only fish but also mice, small birds or chicks, etc.).  This one was successful numerous times during my short stop to test the new lens and handheld abilities.  (9-3-2023)

Yes, it's a bit soft stretched out to 400mm, especially with higher ISO's but this was a test to see just how well the image stabilization in both the camera and the lens could accomplish while handheld.  I will do more serious testing with a tripod and far more close to the subject at hand, for this heron was well across the water from my shoreline.  I'm on the fence when it comes to obtaining the 1.4 teleconverter, for this vairable-aperture lens really needs good lighting to perform and using the 1.4 will only create greater trade-offs than are worth it, most likely.  I will first focus on finding the acceptable envelope for lighting and distance with this lens.
