Douro Valley where Port Wine is produced

The Douro Valley is located in the North of Portugal, extending from the city of Porto to the eastern border, where the Port wine production activities and the unique scenery sculpted by the Douro river and its tributaries are highlights not to be missed. The sun-bleached town of Régua abuts the Rio Douro at the western edge of the demarcated port-wine region. As the region’s largest riverside town, it grew into a major port-wine entrepôt in the 18th century, and remains an important transport junction. Despite the changes that the famous Port wine brought to the region, the Douro Valley has maintained its rural character and traditional roots with its handicrafts and religious customs. Stunning landscapes that yield produce and wines of excellence. The Douro River and the Douro Valley are known primarily for Port, a sweet wine that has been produced here for two thousand years, along with less well-known red and white table wines. The Alto (upper) Douro, also known as the Douro Vinhateiro is dominated by big placards on the hillsides bearing the names of famous Port producers such as Cockburns, Taylors and Sandeman. De Douro-vallei zou ook de betoverende vallei kunnen genoemd worden, zo adembenemend mooi is het landschap. Vanaf Porto, bij de monding van de rivier waar de in de vallei geproduceerde Douro-wijnen (tafelwijnen) en de portwijnen (versterkte wijnen) worden bewaard, kunt u dit als Werelderfgoed erkende cultuurlandschap op verschillende manieren ontdekken: met de auto, met de trein en met de boot. In Peso da Régua leert u in het Museu do Douro de wijnbouw en de regio vanuit een ander perspectief bekijken. Niet ver hier vandaan, aan de zuidelijke oever, ligt Lamego, een van de mooiste steden van Noord-Portugal. Een immens trappencomplex met blauwe en witte azulejos leidt naar het heiligdom Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. De in 1756 opgerichte regio Alto Douro Vinhateiro is de wijnstreek van de portwijn die van oudsher wordt uitgevoerd. Het is dan ook niet te verwonderen dat het in deze streek al eeuwenlang de traditie is om bezoekers te ontvangen en met hen het beste van de regio te delen. Eerst en vooral is er het indrukwekkende landschap van de Douro-vallei waar de mensen terrassen hebben gebouwd om de wijnstokken op de steile hellingen te kunnen planten. Het landschap dat daaruit is voortgekomen is door Unesco erkend als werelderfgoed en ligt bezaaid met wijnboerderijen zoals Sandeman. Bovendien zijn de wijnen een uitstekend excuus om ook het landschap, het erfgoed, de cultuur en de mensen te ontdekken. Meer foto's zien in m'n Porto album.
