From the 8th century BC. the settlements of the surrounding hills united and the city of Rome was founded. The Forum Romanum also known as Foro Romano, is a plaza surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. When you look at the Roman Forum today, you will see a large plain full of ruins. Yet this has not always been the case. Once the Forum Romanum was the bustling center of Rome. Everyone came here. Acting on political talk, important decisions were taken at the Roman Forum. The Colosseum built in the 1st century AD in Rome, was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire. The construction was started in the year 72 and was funded by the Siege of Jerusalem in 70. After its completion in 80 it was consecrated by Titus. The games at the opening lasted 100 days. There were 76 entrances that were numbered with Roman numerals (the numbers are still visible above the entrances XXIII-LIV). It offered place between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators. There were four gladiator schools in the niegbourhood of the Coliseum. During normal games in the Colosseum, wild animal fights were held in the morning. The arena was arranged appropriately with rocks, bushes, etc. At noon there was a break program for interested parties in which convicted prisoners were thrown for the wild animals. The afternoon program with the gladiator shows was the highlight. The Coliseum is depicted on the Italian 5 Euro

Vanaf de 8e eeuw v.Chr. verenigden de nederzettingen van de omliggende heuvels zich en ontstond de stad Rome. Het Forum Romanum - Latijn voor Romeins marktplein - was in de oudheid het centrum van Rome. Het forum was in de gloriedagen van het Romeinse Rijk het politieke, juridische, religieuze en commerciële centrum van de stad. Wie nu kijkt naar het Forum Romanum, ziet een grote vlakte vol ruïnes. Toch is dit niet altijd zo geweest. Ooit was het Forum Romanum het bruisende centrum van Rome. Iedereen kwam hier naar toe. Er werd gehandeld, over politiek gepraat, belangrijke beslissingen werden bij het Forum Romanum genomen. Het Colosseum gebouwd in de 1e eeuw na Chr. te Rome, was het grootste amfitheater in het Romeinse Rijk. De bouw werd begonnen in het jaar 72 en gefinancierd uit de krijgsbuit van de plundering van Jeruzalem in 70. Na de voltooiing in 80 werd het ingewijd door Titus. De spelen bij de opening duurden 100 dagen. Er waren 76 ingangen die genummerd waren met Romeinse cijfers (boven de ingangen XXIII-LIV zijn de nummers nog zichtbaar). Het bood plaats tussen 50.000 en 80.000 toeschouwers. In de nabijheid van het Colosseum waren vier gladiatorenscholen. Bij normale spelen in het Colosseum werden ’s morgens wilde-dierengevechten gehouden. De arena werd op passende wijze ingericht met rotspartijen, struiken, e.d. Tussen de middag was er voor geïnteresseerden een pauzeprogramma waarin veroordeelde gevangenen voor de wilde dieren werden gegooid. Het middagprogramma met de gladiatorenshows vormde het hoogtepunt. Het Colosseum staat afgebeeld op de Italiaanse 5 eurocent. We bezoeken Rome op een hete zomerdag en temperaturen stijgen tot boven de 40ºC. We hebben het langzaam gedaan te midden van de meest intense hittegolf in de regio.
