God of the wild discovers Hermaphroditus, Fresco, c. 67 AD

Before Christianity became more popular, the Roman empire was rather loose on sexuality in general. The Romans really didn’t have much care over rich men having mistresses and a slave was required by law to accept his or her master’s advances. Of course, raping a slave was considered dishonorable, but it was still nonetheless legal. One thing the Romans weren’t really happy about however was public nudity, particularly of citizens. In terms of art, the Romans did not care at all about nudity. Roman art often portrayed nudity. The House of the Vettii is a home of a wealthy man located in the Roman town, Pompeii, which was preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Its careful excavation has preserved almost all of the wall frescos, which were completed following the earthquake of 62 AD. The house is one of the largest houses in Pompeii, spanning the entire southern section. The House of the Vettii features a large assortment of fresco paintings. There are twelve surviving panels, which depict mythological scenes. It is believed that the scenes are copied from Greek models, but no Greek paintings have survived to compare the frescoes to. The theme of protection, wealth and excitement within the walls of the House of the Vettii is hard to ignore. As a representative example, the presence of Dionysus, Mercury and Priapus were all very prominent and of course of great importance to the Vettii brothers and their values. Yet the House of the Vettii was not only home to those three gods. As you leave the house, you can see two frescoes of Hermaphroditus, son of Hermes and Aphroditus. A Greek mythology that combined male and female characteristics. Seen above in room oecus p, where Pan discovered Hermaphroditus. Pán is the God of the wild, nature, and is often associated with sexuality. The other is to the right of the doorway. This shows Pan surprising Hermaphroditus who is clearly excited, illustrated by his stiff member.

Voor het christendom populair werd, was het Romeinse rijk in het algemeen vrij los van seksualiteit. De Romeinen gaven er echt niet veel om dat rijke mannen minnaressen hadden en een slaaf was wettelijk verplicht om de lusten van zijn of haar meester te accepteren. Natuurlijk werd het verkrachten van een slaaf als oneervol beschouwd, maar het was nog steeds legaal. Eén ding waar de Romeinen echter niet zo blij mee waren, was publieke naaktheid, vooral van burgers. Op het gebied van kunst gaven de Romeinen helemaal niets om naaktheid. Romeinse kunst portretteerde vaak naaktheid. Het huis van de Vettii is het huis van een rijke man in de Romeinse stad Pompeii, die werd bewaard door de uitbarsting van de Vesuvius in het jaar 79 na Christus. De zorgvuldige opgraving heeft bijna alle muurfresco's bewaard, die werden voltooid na de aardbeving van 62 na Christus. Het huis is een van de grootste huizen in Pompeii. The House of the Vettii heeft een groot assortiment aan fresco's. Er zijn twaalf overgebleven panelen met mythologische scènes. Er wordt aangenomen dat de scènes zijn gekopieerd van Griekse modellen, maar er zijn geen Griekse schilderijen bewaard gebleven om de fresco's mee te vergelijken. Het thema van bescherming, rijkdom en opwinding binnen de muren van het Huis van de Vettii is moeilijk te negeren. Als representatief voorbeeld waren de aanwezigheid van Dionysus, Mercurius en Priapus allemaal zeer prominent aanwezig en uiteraard van groot belang voor de gebroeders Vettii. Toch was het Huis van de Vettii niet alleen de thuisbasis van die drie goden. Bij het verlaten van het huis zijn er twee fresco's te zien van Hermaphroditus, zoon van Hermes en Aphroditus. Een Griekse mythologie die mannelijke en vrouwelijke kenmerken hadden gecombineerd. Hierboven te zien in kamer oecus p, waar Pan Hermaphroditus ontdekt. Pán is de God van de natuur, het wild en wordt vaak geassocieerd met seksualiteit. De andere bevindt zich rechts van de deuropening. Deze toont Pan verrassende Hermaphroditus die duidelijk opgewonden is, geïllustreerd door zijn stijve lid.
