The fresco of the famous Priapus is not so difficult to miss in Pompeii

Before Christianity became more popular, the Roman empire was rather loose on sexuality in general. The Romans really didn’t have much care over rich men having mistresses and a slave was required by law to accept his or her master’s advances. Of course, raping a slave was considered dishonorable, but it was still nonetheless legal. One thing the Romans weren’t really happy about however was public nudity, particularly of citizens. In terms of art, the Romans did not care at all about nudity. Roman art often portrayed nudity. The House of the Vettii is a home of a wealthy man located in the Roman town, Pompeii, which was preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Its careful excavation has preserved almost all of the wall frescos, which were completed following the earthquake of 62 AD. The house is one of the largest houses in Pompeii, spanning the entire southern section. The House of the Vettii features a large assortment of fresco paintings. There are twelve surviving panels, which depict mythological scenes. It is believed that the scenes are copied from Greek models, but no Greek paintings have survived to compare the frescoes to. The paintings combine to create a theme of divine reward and punishment. Most famously are the two depictions of Priapus, the god of fertility. The first image of Priapus is a fresco in the doorway. The painting depicts Priapus weighing his phallic member on a set of scales. The second image mirrors the first but in marble. In Greek mythology, Priapus was a minor rustic fertility god, protector of livestock, fruit plants, gardens and male genitalia. Priapus is marked by his oversized, permanent erection, which gave rise to the medical term priapism. He became a popular figure in Roman erotic art and Latin literature, and is the subject of the often humorously obscene collection of verse called the Priapeia.

Natuurlijk werd het verkrachten van een slaaf als oneervol beschouwd, maar het was nog steeds legaal. Eén ding waar de Romeinen echter niet zo blij mee waren, was publieke naaktheid, vooral van burgers. Op het gebied van kunst gaven de Romeinen helemaal niets om naaktheid. Romeinse kunst portretteerde vaak naaktheid. Het huis van de Vettii is het huis van een rijke man in de Romeinse stad Pompeii.
