Pompei is a city and commune in the Metropolitan City of Naples in Italy, home of the ancient Roman ruins part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city is mainly famous for the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii. Pompeii city and its people was buried under 4 to 6 m of volcanic ash and pumice in the big eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The first stable settlements on the site date back to the 8th century BC. In Roman times it was a flourishing city with about 12,000 inhabitants. The Roman city was destroyed by a volcanic eruption 2,000 years ago. The often lifelike poses of many victims in Pompeii - lying together, crawling, on a mother's lap, face to face - help scientists get a new interpretation of how these Romans died in the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD. Until now, it was widely believed that most victims died from volcanic gas and ash. But a recent study says most died directly from tremendous heat. The House of Venus was built in the 1st century BC and underwent a number of significant changes in its internal layout. The house belonged to a branch of the family of the Satrii, very prominent in the last few years of the city. Just like in the House of the Vettii, the garden with columns which becomes the focal point of the house around which there are various frescoed rooms. The back wall of courtyard is decorated with a great and spectacular fresco of Venus, which gives the house its name. The upper part of the wall shown above is divided into different scenes: to the left, a statue of Mars with a spear and shield on a pedestal. To the right , two cherubs accompany Venus, protectress of Pompeii and of the erotic sphere, lying in a large shell. The goddess, completely naked, wears only a tiara on her head and jewelry around her neck, wrists and ankles.

Mount Vesuvius, the Italian volcano still considered dangerous, erupted in AD 79 and destroyed Pompeii with ashes and lava. There is ample documentation of the Roman house in Pompeii, from modest dwellings to large and magnificent villas with sumptuous decorations, from simple workmen's houses to the elegant residences of the noble class, from the homes of merchants which were built around their workshops, to those with their own vegetable garden and plots of land used for agricultural purposes. Its size is purely imaginary, It depicts the goddess Venus arriving at the shore after her birth, when she had emerged from the sea fully-grown. To the left, a statue of Mars with a spear and shield on a pedestal. The house is distinguished by its magnificent garden consisting of an open gallery and a pergola.

De stad staat vooral bekend om de ruïnes van de oude stad Pompeï. De stad Pompeii en haar inwoners werden begraven onder 4 tot 6 m vulkanische as en puimsteen tijdens de grote uitbarsting van de Vesuvius De eerste nederzettingen op de site dateren uit de 8e eeuw voor Christus. In de Romeinse tijd was het een bloeiende stad met ongeveer 12.000 inwoners. De Romeinse stad werd 2000 jaar geleden verwoest door een vulkaanuitbarsting. De vaak levensechte poses van veel slachtoffers in Pompeii - liggende tegen elkaar, kruipend, op de schoot van een moeder, met gezicht in handen - helpen wetenschappers om een nieuwe interpretatie te krijgen van hoe deze Romeinen stierven in de uitbarstingen van de vulkaan Vesuvius in het jaar 79 na Christus. Tot nu toe werd algemeen aangenomen dat de meeste slachtoffers dood gingen door vulkanische gas en as. Maar een recent onderzoek zegt dat de meesten direct stierven door enorme hitte. Het huis van Venus werd gebouwd in de 1e eeuw voor Christus en onderging een aantal belangrijke veranderingen in de interne indeling. Het huis behoorde tot een tak van de familie van de Satrii, zeer prominent aanwezig in de laatste jaren van de stad. Net als in het huis van de Vettii, de tuin met zuilen die het middelpunt wordt van het huis waarrond verschillende kamers met fresco's zijn. De achterwand van de binnenplaats is versierd met een groot en spectaculair fresco van Venus, waaraan het huis zijn naam dankt. Het bovenste deel van de hierboven getoonde muur is verdeeld in verschillende scènes: aan de linkerkant een standbeeld van Mars met een speer en een schild op een voetstuk. In het midden vergezellen twee cherubijnen Venus, beschermster van Pompeii en van de erotische sfeer, liggend in een grote schelp. De godin, volledig naakt, draagt alleen een tiara op haar hoofd en sieraden om haar nek, polsen en enkels.
