Croatia is a country in Southeast Europe. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southeast, sharing a maritime border with Italy. Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia. A population of 4 million, most of whom are Catholics. Zagreb is the capital. Balanced between the Balkans and Central Europe, this country has been passed between rival kingdoms, empires and republics for thousands of years. If there is an advantage to this ongoing disruption, it is in the rich cultural legacy each has left behind. From Venetian palaces, Napoleonic fortresses, Slavic churches, Viennese mansions to socialist sculptures. But most attraction is the coastline with the remarkable clarity of the water and white pebbly beach. Despite being the fastest rising holiday destination in Europe in the past decade, Croatia still doesn't feel overrun by tourists. There are long sandy and winding beaches too, perfect for lazy days. Croatia is a beautiful country to discover many different landscapes. Ston is part of the Peljesac Peninsula and known for three things – its very well preserved town walls, its salt works, and its mussels. Because of its geopolitical and strategic position, Ston has had a rich history. Located at the gates of the peninsula, surrounded by three seas, protected by four hills, rich in fresh water and saltwater, fertile plains, it has been an important political and cultural centre.

The Walls of Ston at the Pelješac Peninsula are much longer than those of its more famous neighbour, Dubrovnik, at 5km in length. This makes them the longest defensive structure in Europe. Built in the 14th and 15th centuries as a additional defence for the Republic of Ragusa - Dubrovnik. The walls also consist of three fortresses – in Ston, Mali Ston and Prodzvizd Fort – and a number of towers. The walls once stretched for as long as 7km, but parts were destroyed following the fall of the Republic of Ragusa. Today the greater part of the walls have been restored. The walk up is quite steep and really gets the blood pumping but also beautiful and a lot of fun. It takes 1.5 hours and provides beautiful views of the area. Kroatië is een land in Zuidoost-Europa. Het grenst aan Slovenië in het noordwesten, Hongarije in het noordoosten, Servië in het oosten, Bosnië-Herzegovina en Montenegro in het zuidoosten en deelt een maritieme grens met Italië. Kroatië maakte deel uit van het voormalige Joegoslavië. Een bevolking van 4 miljoen, van wie de meesten katholiek zijn. Zagreb is de hoofdstad. In evenwicht tussen de Balkan en Centraal-Europa, wordt dit land al duizenden jaren doorgegeven tussen rivaliserende koninkrijken, rijken en republieken. De meeste attractie is de kustlijn met de opmerkelijke helderheid van het water en het witte kiezelstrand. Ondanks dat het de afgelopen tien jaar de snelst stijgende vakantiebestemming in Europa is, voelt Kroatië zich nog steeds niet overspoeld door toeristen. Ston maakt deel uit van het schiereiland Pelješac en staat bekend om drie dingen: de zeer goed bewaarde stadsmuren, de zoutpannen en de mosselen. Door zijn geopolitieke en strategische positie heeft Ston een rijke geschiedenis. Gelegen aan de poorten van het schiereiland, omgeven door drie zeeën, beschermd door vier heuvels, rijk aan zoet en zout water, vruchtbare vlaktes, is het een belangrijk politiek en cultureel centrum geweest. De muren zijn veel langer dan die van zijn bekendere buur, Dubrovnik, met een lengte van 5 km. Dit maakt ze de langste verdedigingsstructuur in Europa. Gebouwd in de 14e en 15e eeuw als extra verdediging voor de Republiek Ragusa - Dubrovnik. De muren bestaan ook uit drie forten - in Ston, Mali Ston en Prodzvizd Fort - en een aantal torens. De muren strekten zich ooit uit tot 7 km, maar delen werden vernietigd na de val van de Republiek Ragusa. Vandaag is het grootste deel van de muren gerestaureerd.
De wandeling naar boven is behoorlijk steil en laat het bloed echt pompen, maar ook mooi en heel leuk. Het duurt 1,5 uur en biedt een prachtig uitzicht over de omgeving.
