Montenegro is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and the Adriatic Sea. It used to be a part of Yugoslavia. The capital is Podgorica. The name Montenegro is Italian and means Black mountain. Montenegro was an independent princedom between 1878 and 1910 and an independent kingdom until 1918. That year Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia. In 2003 Yugoslavia was transformed into the new country of Serbia and Montenegro, but this fell apart in 2006 when both countries went their separate ways. Montenegro is therefore the youngest country in Europe. Montenegro is not a member of the European Union, but it is a member of NATO. Despite the fact that Montenegro is not yet an EU Member State, people do pay with the euro. Montenegro may be small, but this beautiful nation has a huge array of natural and man-made wonders. Once overlooked in favor of more famous Mediterranean countries, Montenegro is quickly gaining a reputation as a great place to travel. It's easy to see why. The mountainous hinterland is home to deep gorges, flowing rivers, glacial lakes and old-growth forests, popular for adventure activities. Although Herceg Novi is one of the youngest towns in Montenegro, it attracts special attention due to its location and lush greenery. It is located on the slopes of Mount Orjen - 1895 m, the highest of the Dinaric massifs, while at the same time overlooking one of the most beautiful bays in the world, the southernmost fjord in Europe and the deepest in the Mediterranean. Herceg Novi is a city of fortresses and towers because the urban development was based on the defense function of fortresses: Forte Mare and Kanli Kula.

Forte Mare is located on the coast in the area in front of the eastern doors of the old town. Kanli Kula is located above the city. Forte Mare sits dramatically atop a rocky outcrop just above the sea at the southernmost point of the old town. This is a single example of continuity from the construction of Bosnian rulers from the 17th century to Austrian interventions in the 19th and 20th centuries. Forte Mare is definitely one of the finest examples of fortification architecture and it is suspected that the core of the old town was here. It used to be called the Tower of Abas-Pasha castle in Turkish times, but was renamed Forte Mare in Venetian times, the name and appearance it still has today. Today, Forte Mare is not only one of the symbols of the city and a must-visit attraction for tourists, but is also the venue for the annual festival.

De naam Montenegro is Italiaans en betekent Zwarte berg. Montenegro was tussen 1878 en 1910 een zelfstandig prinsdom en tot 1918 een zelfstandig koninkrijk. Dat jaar werd Montenegro onderdeel van Joegoslavië. In 2003 werd Joegoslavië omgevormd in het nieuwe land Servië en Montenegro, maar dit viel in 2006 uit elkaar toen beide landen een eigen weg gingen. Montenegro is misschien klein, maar deze prachtige natie heeft een enorm scala aan natuurlijke en door de mens gemaakte wonderen. Ooit over het hoofd gezien ten gunste van meer bekende mediterrane landen, krijgt Montenegro snel een reputatie als een geweldige plek om te reizen. Het is gemakkelijk te zien waarom. Het bergachtige achterland herbergt diepe kloven, stromende rivieren, gletsjermeren en oerbossen, populair voor avontuurlijke activiteiten. Hoewel Herceg Novi een van de jongste steden in Montenegro is, trekt het vanwege zijn ligging en weelderig groen speciale aandacht. Het ligt op de hellingen van de berg Orjen - 1895 m, het hoogste van de Dinarische massieven, terwijl het tegelijkertijd uitkijkt op een van de mooiste baaien ter wereld, de meest zuidelijke fjord van Europa en de diepste in de Middellandse Zee. Herceg Novi is een stad van forten en torens omdat de stedelijke ontwikkeling gebaseerd was op de verdedigingsfunctie van forten: Forte Mare en Kanli Kula. Forte Mare ligt aan de kust in het gebied voor de oostelijke deuren van de oude stad. Kanli Kula ligt boven de stad. Forte Mare ligt dramatisch bovenop een rotspunt net boven de zee op het zuidelijkste punt van de oude stad. Dit is een enkel voorbeeld van continuïteit van de constructie van Bosnische heersers van de 17e eeuw tot Oostenrijkse interventies in de 19e en 20e eeuw. Forte Mare is absoluut één van de mooiste voorbeelden van architectuur in vestingwerken en het vermoeden is reëel dat hier de kern van de oude stad was. Het werd vroeger het kasteel Toren van Abas-Pasha genoemd in de Turkse tijd, maar werd in de Venetiaanse tijd omgedoopt tot Forte Mare, de naam en het uiterlijk dat het vandaag de dag nog steeds heeft. Tegenwoordig is Forte Mare niet alleen een van de symbolen van de stad en een must-visit attractie voor toeristen, maar is het ook de locatie voor het jaarlijkse festival.
