Boston - Back Bay: First Baptist Church

            The First Baptist Church of Boston, or Brattle Square Church, is one of the oldest Baptists churches in the country, established in 1665.  The current church building, the fifth meeting house for the congregation, located at 110 Commonwealth Avenue, was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by Henry Hobson Richardson and opened in 1872.  It initially serviced the Unitarian congregation of the Brattle Street Church, also known as the Church in Brattle Square, which quickly dissolved.  The First Baptist congregation bought the building in 1881.  The building is known for its prominent tower, with distinctive friezes carved in-situ by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi representing four sacraments, with faces of famous Bostonians, Abraham Lincoln, and Bartholdi's friends of that era.
