Anti-draft leaders challenge Justice Department: 1967

The protest occurred the day before the massive march on the Pentagon against the Vietnam War.

Yale University chaplain Sloan, author Mitchell Goodman, author Norman Mailer, Spock and nearly 500 other luminaries signed a statement saying they would “aid and abet” any draft resisters in any way possible.

Aiding and abetting draft resisters is a felony, punishable by a maximum $10,000 fine and up to five years in prison.

Sloan challenged a Justice Department official to arrest him when he tried to hand him the draft cards and ultimately left them on a table.

“Here was an officer of the law facing clear evidence of an alleged crime, and refusing to accept that evidence,” said Coffin. “He was derelict in his duty.”

Before rallying at the Justice Department, the group had gathered at the Reformation Lutheran Church at 212 East Capitol Street and marched to the building.

On January 5, 1968 Spock, Coffin, Goodman and Marcus Raskin, a founder of the Institute for Policy Studies and father of future congressman Jaime Raskin were indicted by a Federal grand jury for "conspiracy to counsel, aid and abet draft resistance."

All four had signed the statement and all but Raskin were convicted that June, but in 1970 an appeals court overturned the verdict.
