Le musée du Louvre est le plus grand musée de Paris par sa surface (210 000 m2 dont 60 600 consacrés aux expositions1) et l'un des plus importants du monde. Situé au cœur de la ville, entre la rive droite de la Seine et la rue de Rivoli, dans le Ier arrondissement, le bâtiment est un ancien palais royal, le palais du Louvre. La statue équestre de Louis XIV constitue le point de départ de l'axe historique, mais le palais n'est pas aligné sur cet axe. Le Louvre possède une longue histoire de conservation artistique et historique de la France, depuis les rois capétiens jusqu'à nos jours.

The Musée du Louvre (French pronunciation: [myze dy luvʁ]), or officially Grand Louvre — in English, the Louvre Museum or simply the Louvre — is one of the world's largest museums, the most visited art museum in the world and a historic monument. A central landmark of Paris, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement (district). Nearly 35,000 objects from prehistory to the 19th century are exhibited over an area of 60,600 square metres (652,300 square feet).
