Morspoort

            De Morspoort in het altijd mooie Leiden. Deze oude stadspoort wilde ik al een tijdlang op de plaat zetten. En hoewel ik niet ontevreden ben met deze foto, wil ik hier graag ook nog een staan met spiegelglad water.

Het was hier flink zoeken naar een goede compositie. Eigenlijk wilde ik een hoek hebben waarbij de ophaalbrug los kwam van het poortgebouw, maar die bleek er niet te zijn. Althans, niet zonder toestemming om op de loopplank van een van de woonboten te gaan staan. En vanaf de waterkant gezien, gooide een groepje bomen langs het water roet in het eten.

Toch ben ik uiteindelijk blij dat die hoek niet werkte. Anders had ik wellicht nooit deze hoek gevonden, die ik – zeker wat lijnen betreft – achteraf veel beter vind werken. Enkel water in de voorgrond was deze avond bovendien niet nodig, omdat de reflecties hier toch geen hoofdrol spelen.

The Morspoort in the always pretty city of Leiden. I've been wanting to shoot this old city gate for a long time. And while I'm by no means unsatisfied with this picture, I want to come back here with perfectly still water.

It was quite a hunt for a good composition. At first, I wanted to get an angle from where the bridge didn't partly obscure the gate building, but I couldn't find any. Not without permission to stand on the ramp to one of the boat houses, at least. And seen from the water's edge, a cluster of trees threw a spanner in the works.

Still, I'm happy that angle didn't work out. Otherwise, I might never have found this angle, which – not least because of the lines – I find to work much better. Besides, only water in the foreground wasn't necessary this particular evening, as the reflections don't play the main part anyway.
