San Lorenzo de El Escorial - a photo on Flickriver

En la Carta que Felipe II escribe al general de la orden jerónima, el 16 de Abril de 1561, se exponen los motivos que le llevan a construir el Monasterio: el reconocimiento por la victoria de San Quintín, que tuvo lugar el día de San Lorenzo de 1557 y el deseo de erigir un mausoleo en memoria de sus padres y de él mismo, puesto bajo la advocación de San Lorenzo.

La obra se inicia con el arquitecto Juan Bautista de Toledo en 1563, pero quien la continua es su discípulo Juan de Herrera, desde 1567, fecha del fallecimiento de Juan Bautista de Toledo, hasta 1584, año en que se termina la construcción del Monasterio. Este arquitecto reforma el proyecto anterior y crea un estilo propio, denominado herreriano, caracterizado por la desnudez decorativa y el rigor geométrico.

La fachada principal, orientada al oeste, tiene dos portones laterales que se corresponden con la entrada al colegio Alfonso XII y al convento agustiniano. En el centro de la fachada, entre seis columnas dóricas, se sitúa la entrada principal del edificio, coronada por un cuerpo de columnas jónicas, entre las que destacan el escudo familiar de Felipe II y una colosal estatua de San Lorenzo, tallada en granito por Juan Bautista Monegro.

En su interior destacan el Patio de Reyes, la Basílica, la Biblioteca, el Panteón de Reyes, el Panteón de Infantes, los Palacios, y las Salas capitulares, entre otros espacios. De obligada visita son la Pinacoteca y el Museo de Arquitectura.
