Castlerigg Stone Circle. - a photo on Flickriver

Almost all comments about stone circles are, quite rightly, couched with a "possibly" or a "probably".
Castrigg is one of the earliest of its type in the British Isles being erected around 5,000 years ago in the New Stone Age.
It's not a circle but more egg shaped. Without doubt the setting., on a low hill where valleys meet, is dramatic to the point of theatre. Surrounded by mountains and steeped in legend and folk lore. The only thing that detracts is the popularity of the site. Difficult to experience the atmosphere of the place when being jostled by the crowds. Visit in a thunderstorm or at midnight is the best advice.
