Spring at Bull Pen Falls - a photo on Flickriver

            I want to start the week off with this photo I took back in early May from a pretty well known cascade on the Chattooga River in Western North Carolina. 

I reckon this cascade is large enough to be considered a small waterfall, and I have come to know it as either Potholes Falls, the Chattooga Potholes or Bull Pen Falls. Personally, I prefer the latter, being that it's right off Bull Pen Road.

The reason for the name Potholes Falls, is the unique pothole features of the rocks along this rapid of the Chattooga. 

Over time, rock and sediment within the rushing water has carved out holes in the river bed, creating perfectly round holes and shapes that make for interesting compositions and are generally quite eye catching.

There are several other areas along rivers in the Southern Appalachians where you can observe such features in the rocks, but this is by far the most prevalent display that I know of.

Located in Nantahala National Forest and the Ellicott's Rock Wilderness Area, Bull Pen Falls always makes for a nice stop to or from the beautiful mountain towns of Cashiers and Highlands. It's generally not a busy location, but I have seen the small parking area near the old Iron Bridge filled to capacity on a few occasions. 

While it's a beautiful location with access to hiking trails along the river, be sure to practice caution when exploring around the falls; the rocks are quite slippery and the water can be quite intense and deep in many places.
