Marryatville High School Eden Park Year 12 Campus: designed by Alfred Wells for Thomas Scarfe. South Australia

            Alfred Wells designed Eden Park, The Crescent, Marryatville, for Thomas Roger Scarfe, a partner in the Harris Scarfe department store.
The site was prominent in the history of the local area and the first house had been built there in 1840. The property changed hands several times before Scarfe purchased it in 1900. The large residence that Wells designed survives today in the grounds of Marryatville High School.

*Eden Park is a substantially intact and excellent example of a large architect designed residence.
It displays an interesting combination of architectural styles, with flamboyant Anglo-Dutch elements tempered by Victorian tradition.
Internally the house retains an excellent range of domestic embellishment from a variety of design sources, including a notable central stair hall surmounted by an elegant floral stained glass skylight, the work of E F Troy.

Thomas Scarfe died in 1915 and his widow in 1942. During World War Two their daughter gave the home to the Red Cross as a convalescent home for servicewomen. After purchase by the Adelaide Hospital it was used as a nurses home. After the war the Government purchased 20 of the original 47 acres for the site of the new Norwood Boys Technical School – now Marryatville High School. 

*"Marryatville founded in the forties by Mr George Brunskill," is stated in the brief account of that district in the interesting History of Kensington and Norwood issued by the corporation in 1903. 

As will be seen, Mr Brunskill gave the land for St Matthew's Church, and assisted materially in its erection. 
The following interesting notes have been supplied by Mrs Reid, formerly Miss Brunskill, who writes: — "My parents arrived in the ship Thomas Harrison in February, 1839. They settled at once on the land now Marryatville, and built their first home on the spot where Sir Edwin Smith afterwards lived, then a cottage at the east end of the section, and finally on the spot where Mrs Scarfe's house is. We finally left 20 years later, after selling most of the land. My father gave an acre of land for a church and parsonage, and was annoyed when the Bishop consecrated the ground for a burial ground. 
One incident still in memory is seeing my father bring home a Norfolk Island pine in a flower pot, price 7/6! It is now an ornament to the neighbourhood in the Scarfe garden. 
I have heard my mother say that they used to light a fire to show my father the way home from town, so the place must have been thickly wooded!"

Eden Park, which, with its extensive grounds and well-grown trees, gives to Marryatville most of its picturesqueness, was named by Mr Brunskill, probably after the River Eden, in Cumberland. The present fine home was erected by Mr T Scarfe, about 1900, on the site of the house built by Mr Brunskill, and with alterations and additions, occupied in turn by the Calders, the McDonalds, and the Cavanaghs. In the garden is preserved a stately old gum almost the sole survivor of the giant trees of the lost forest

Scarfe’s home is now the Year 12 Campus of Marryatville High School. Its stables are part of the school music centre.
