Darwin Old Courthouse and Police Station designed by architect John George Knight: later first Government House and Administrator's Office as well as Headquarters of the RAN. Northern Territory Australia

            Located close to the Supreme Court (white mansard roof showing) and Parliament House.

A plaque on this building reads as follows:-

OLD COURTHOUSE AND POLICE STATION 
These buildings, said to have been designed by John George Knight, architect, and built under the supervision of Gilbert Rothdale McMinn, Senior Surveyor and Supervisor of Works were erected in 1884 as the first Courthouse, Cellblock and Police Station in the Northern Territory.

In 1942 the buildings were occupied by the Royal Australian Navy as Naval Headquarters and continued to be used by the Navy as HMAS Melville until their partial destruction by Cyclone Tracy in December 1974.

The reconstructed buildings were officially re-opened by the Chief Minister the Hon Paul Everingham MLA on December 24 1981 and will be used as offices for the present Administrator of the Northern Territory – Commodore E E Johnston AM OBE CStJ and his successors.

This building was also the first Government House, and is on the Northern Territory Heritage Register.
