*State’s First Area School at Karoonda
Eleven Schools to be Grouped in One
Karoonda is to have the first area School in the State. Eleven schools of the district will be grouped in one, and students will be conveyed to and from school daily by bus. In making this announcement the Minister for Education (Hon S W Jeffries) said that one of the great advantages of area schools was the opportunity they provided for the teaching of specialized subjects valuable to the children in any district where most of them would spend their future years.
Karoonda Oct 2.
The Minister and Director of Education (Mr Jeffries and Dr C E Fenner) accompanied by Inspector Shaw, visited Karoonda on September 26 and 27.
In the Karoonda Institute they met a representative gathering of parents of the district and explained the proposal for establishing an area school at Karoonda.
The proposal is to transport to and from Karoonda each day, the children from the outlying schools at Mindiyarra, Perponda, Lowaldie, Borrika, Pilchera, Nunkeri, Yurgo, Culkawarra, Wynarka and Kulde.
Early next year when the scheme is first put into operation there will be two buses engaged in transporting the scholars, and eventually it is expected that four buses will be involved.
In order that no delay may be occasioned in getting the scheme under way, some of the portable buildings serving as small schools will be moved to Karoonda, and ultimately it is intended to make additions to the present Karoonda school.
The new scheme, when fully in operation, will increase the Karoonda roll call from 70 to 200.
The meeting proved very enthusiastic concerning the proposal, and a resolution was carried agreeing to the establishment of the area school at Karoonda.
The chairman of the District Council (Cr H S Green) presided.
Subsequently it was announced in Adelaide that Karoonda was to have the first area school in the State.
There is general jubilation in the district as the result of the announcement. Ref: Murray Pioneer and Australian River Record (Renmark SA) Thursday 3 October 1940.
*First Area School January 28
In opening the Karoonda Area School today the Minister of Education (Mr Jeffries) said that it was a most important event in education in South Australia, for it was the first step in the establishment of such schools throughout South Australia. The one-teacher schools have done wonderful work.
The school will have an attendance of 112, and the Kulde, Kulkawarra, Lowaldie, Nunkeri, and Wynarka one-teacher schools have been closed. Every day the children of these schools will be transported to and from school by motor transport, except in the case of those from Lowaldie, who will be brought six miles in by horse transport.
The large crowd from all parts of the district which assembled at the opening today reflected the enthusiasm of the parents. Representatives from two other schools asked Mr Jeffries to include their districts in the scheme. There is room at the school for an additional 30 children. *Karoonda Area School’s Two Years of Progress
Eight Smaller Centres Absorbed
Much Vocational Training
Karoonda April 26
The Karoonda Area School, the first of its kind In South Australia, and patterned on the American and Tasmanian schemes, has now been in successful operation since January 1941, and parents are able to assess the value of the scheme from both community and educational standpoints.
Originally in charge of Mr K Polkinghorne BA, the conversion from an ordinary primary school to a semi- technical school necessitated the closing down of many small schools within a radius of ten to twelve miles.
Schools thus closed were Wynarka, Kulde, Nunkeri, Lowaldie, Borrika, Perponda, Mindiyarra and Kulkawirra. Children who previously attended those schools are now transported to and from their homes in all-weather closed motor coaches owned and operated by local folk, hireage being paid by the Education Department. Contractors are at present Messrs C Robin, C J Blenkiron, and F Bassani (2 coaches).
Most of the closed school buildings were transported to Karoonda and re-erected in the school grounds as classrooms. Much equipment has been granted the school by the department and at present under the able direction of Mr A D E Clark BA, much vocational training is imparted to the children. The science laboratory is well found as are also the woodwork rooms, saddlery and blacksmith shop and particularly the domestic arts room. Local folk who have helped in the education of leatherwork and blacksmithing are Mr F Vivian, and the Rev M C Trenorden respectively. Mr A J Peake teaches art, woodwork and sheetmetal work, while Miss E D Rudd takes cooking, laundry and dressmaking.
Other teachers on the staff are Misses Darby and Atwell and Mr K Reinecke. Miss Rudd also conducts adult dressmaking classes on Tuesday evenings and Thursday afternoons. Several of those pupils gained certificates, last year. Ref: Murray Pioneer (Renmark SA) Thursday 29 April 1943.
