            This State Heritage listed building was erected in 1883 as the Manse for the Draper Memorial Methodist Wesleyan Church. The architect was Frederick Wilhelm Dancker: his tender for the Wesleyan Manse building appeared in the South Australian Register 18 July 1882. The building was heritage listed in 1986.

The Draper Memorial Church was built in 1869 in Gilbert Street, Adelaide - it is now demolished. The church was named for the distinguished Daniel James Draper who tragically drowned in January 1866. He and his wife died when their ship wrecked in the Bay of Biscay during a severe storm. He was the minister of the Adelaide circuit between 1846 and 1851 -  he was a Wesleyan minister in Australia for thirty years. 

In 1925 the manse became the Adelaide Central Mission Boys' Hostel, providing temporary accommodation for about thirty young men from the age of sixteen years. 
To provide the necessary facilities, £5000 was spent in building additions to the manse which was officially opened 3 Juy 1926. Soon after, the Mission claimed they could do with a second home. The Mission provided aid during the worsening economic depression in the late 1920s which led to unemployment and destitution.
In 1929 a new missioner, Samuel Forsyth, thought to alleviate some hardships by setting up the Kuitpo Industrial Colony in June 1930. It was a farming community accommodating between seventy and eighty men at a time.

The Draper Manse was also been associated with the Arts Council of South Australia that formed in 1946 through the work of John Horner, Professor Bishop and Colin Ballantyne. It operated without support from the state government. In 1952 activity was suspended until there was a change of government policy. In 1965 the organisation was incorporated into the federal Arts Council of Australia. The grant of £1000 from the Gulbenkian Foundation and the  South Australian division revived. The state government gave £200 that year. 
From that time government grants increased and the old manse was the headquarters for a network of thirty-six branches through the state, staffed by volunteer committees and about 3000 members.
