We reached new heights! - a photo on Flickriver

            Rio 2016 Olympics

I've loaded this image to mark the end of the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games and the superb achievements of TeamGB. As a nation our sporting achievements have been few and far between on the world stage. Success in the Olympic Games has produced a few sporting legends over the decades but with funding from the National Lottery we have emerged as a nation of sporting excellence over the last three games.

Beijing saw that initial investment bare fruit and two sports in particularly dominated their events, winning a major share of the available medals and proving investment is paramount in achieving success at the highest level. If people believed this to be a one-off then the London games put that thought to the sword. 65 medals were won at these games... surely we couldn't top that in Rio?

So on the eve of the closing ceremony of the Rio Games, TeamGB have delivered once again finishing second only to the superpower of the USA and beating those other superpowers of China and Russia. As I write these notes we have 66 medals. More importantly we have finished ahead of all our European neighbours, something that our national football team hasn't been able to say in 50 years. I have read in the press the last few days about the funding awarded to UK Sport, the nation's high performance sports agency (£274m) but if this is across all sports and a four year cycle then the funding of an individual Olympian comes nowhere near that of a premiership footballer's weekly pay packet!

I won't mention any particular sport or individual from these games because there have been too many outstanding, gutsy performances to single one out. I have cheered them all.

As in London and now Rio, TeamGB has provided the nation with a much needed boost to our national pride and who knows what future Olympians will have been inspired by these games. Maybe now we will all be inspired to become a healthier, sporting population that might even help alleviate the pressures on our overworked National Health Service and help repay that investment.   

I for one welcome this funding and hope to be in Manchester when our Olympians are paraded and recognised for their hard work and achievements for the nation. All that remains to be said.... bring on Tokyo!!!
