My first decent Loon shot! I've seen them but until now I can't claim any decent shots. I was over at Reflections Lake with some visitors from Maryland when we saw this Common Loon flying around this lake and then finally settling in to do some fishing. What a gorgeous bird!!

On thing that did surprise me about Loons is how big they are! I saw one in a museum over in Homer and I was struck by their size, about the same as a mature Canada goose. After I photographed this one I had some folks tell me that they had been on the lake the day prior and had seen a loon attack a duck and her chicks by coming up from beneath the water. They had actually captured some video of the attack but it ended just as the loon surfaced beneath the ducks. I don't know if loons predate the chicks or if it's just a means of scaring them off but I'm hearing they are very territorial!
