Le vol du Milan royal est un vol aux battements souples et lents. On a l'impression qu'il vole sans effort.
Chaque fois que possible, il pratique le vol plané pour lequel il est très doué.
Lorsqu'il chasse, il survole le terrain à une hauteur de 10 à 30 mètres, la tête tournée vers le sol que scrutent les yeux très performants. Il explore le terrain, un peu comme font les busards mais de plus haut. Il couvre beaucoup plus de terrain qu'eux et semble infatigable dans sa quête.
