In my garden, very rare visit from this Green Woodpecker..

Bien qu'il soit très arboricole, ce n'est pas dans le bois que le Pic vert recherche sa nourriture. Il se nourrit au sol qu'il parcourt en sautillant à la recherche des fourmilières.
En effet, l'essentiel de son alimentation consiste en fourmis et leurs larves qu'il extirpe du sol avec sa longue langue collante, garnie de petits crochets à son extrémité et très tactile. C'est une arme extraordinaire qui peut se glisser dans les galeries du sol pour harponner les proies qui s'y trouvent. Le pic creuse d'abord le sol du bec pour accéder aux galeries des fourmis, y compris l'hiver quand le sol est gelé en surface. Il peut aussi traverser la couche de neige pour accéder au sol.

Although it is very arboreal, it is not in the wood that the Green Woodpecker looks for its food. It feeds on the ground which it traverses by hopping in search of anthills.
Indeed, most of its diet consists of ants and their larvae that it extracts from the ground with its long sticky tongue, furnished with small hooks at its end and very tactile. It is an extraordinary weapon which can slip into the galleries of the ground to harpoon the preys which are there. The woodpecker first digs the ground with the beak to access the ant galleries, including in winter when the ground is frozen on the surface. It can also cross the layer of snow to access the ground.
