Opatija (HR) - "Das Mädchen mit der Seemöwe"

            Diese Statue ist das berühmteste Symbol nicht nur von Opatija, sondern vom ganzen Kvarner. An ihrer Stelle stand früher die Skulptur der Madonna del Mare. Im Jahr 1891 verlor Graf Arthur Kesselstadt auf tragische Weise auf dem Meer vor Opatija während eines schweren Sturms sein Leben. Nach seinem Tod errichtete seine Familie zu seinen Ehren eine Statue der Mutter Gottes, um über seine Seele zu wachen. Zeit, Wind und Meer hinterließen langsam ihre Spuren an der vergoldeten Skulptur.  Heute kann man die Skulptur im Museum des kroatischen Tourismus in der Villa Angiolina besichtigen. Der Platz der Madonna blieb einige Zeit leer, bis sie 1956 durch die Skulptur Das Mädchen mit der Möwe ersetzt wurde, die der akademische Bildhauer Zvonko Car angefertigt hat.
