HB-IBS was Switzerland's last piston prop, after Swissair, Balair and SATA operated a fair number of DC-3s, DC-4s, DC-6s, DC-7s and Convairs. The only survivor of all these, HB-IBS, was acquired by Balair in 1969, and next to several stints with the International Red Cross, was used on the airline's charter network, and since the A/C model was a convertible, also on cargo flights.

Built for Hunting-Clan in 1958 and later flying with BUA and Air Ferry, HB-IBS was captured doing a swing-over from runway 14 to 16, rattling overhead on completion of a charter service and showing Balair's Swissair-based livery of that time. Having personally flown on this airframe several times, it can only be described as an absolute pleasure, with its interior kept in a bright and friendly light green tone, and the large square windows giving unrivalled views to the countryside.

What a pity therefore that Balair - amidst encountering increasing problems to get Avgas type 108/135 fuel in Europe for the PW R-2800 Double Wasps - decided to retire the DC-6 in 1981. Retirement, however, was not without a farewell flight, taking place in November 1981, and going from Basel to the Swiss Alps, around the Eiger/Mönch/Jungfrau mountains, and offering breathtaking views as the aircraft was circling the snow-covered mountains at flight levels well below the peaks.

HB-IBS eventually became C-GIBS with Conair in 1982, and was converted to a fire bomber. In 2013 it was sold to Everts Air Cargo of Fairbanks, AK, for spares use, and according to recent reports is still stored at Fairbanks as N851CE/tanker number 51.
