Built as XV291 for the Royal Air Force in 1968 as a C-130K Hercules C.1, and becoming a series C.1P in 1982 after the fitting of an air-to-air refuelling probe, this vintage Hercules was eventually acquired by Austria as part of a three-aircraft-purchase from the RAF.

Delivered to Austria in 2003 and 2004, the three became 8T-CA, 8T-CB and 8T-CC with the LuTSta (Lufttransportstaffel or Air Transport Squadron), and were based at the Fliegerhorst at Linz-Hörsching (Hörsching Air Base). 8T-CB paid a very rare visit to Dübendorf Airbase, where it was seen backtracking for a runway 29 line-up and departure back to Austria after arriving earlier in the day. It still had the refuelling probe that was installed by the RAF in 1982 in the light of the Falklands War.

At the proud age of 57, 8T-CB is still active today with the Austrian Air Force, and is still with LuTSta at Linz-Hörsching. Austria, however, has ordered four Embraer C-390 Millenniums, which will eventually replace its aging Hercules fleet.
