Amu Darya: On the border, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan

The historically famous Amu Darya, known as the Oxus to Alexander The Great. Seen here in Uzbekistan, close to the Turkmen border, this great river of Asia no longer makes it to the sea. Water is taken for irragation by all the countries it flows through. The Aral Sea, which used to be its destination, is now just 8% (yes EIGHT PER CENT) of its former size. In the old days, the whole of the left side of the image would be water. 'Darya' was a word for 'ocean', such was its size. Every stalk of cotton takes 16/17 litres of water!

Despite its imperfections, and that this was taken through the window of a moving bus, its one of my favourites.
