Cockatoo Island, departing barge. - a photo on Flickriver

Cockatoo Island is a convict industrial settlement and pre and post-federation shipbuilding complex. It is important in the course of Australia’s cultural history for its use as a place of convict hard labour, secondary punishment and for public works, and its history and contributions to the nation as a dockyard.

Cockatoo Island as well as a unique precinct which highlights
early Aboriginal, convict and shipbuilding history, is also very
popular for camping.
Backpackers, family and school groups are regular users finding
the views spectacular, right in the middle of Sydney Harbour. Cost range from $50 to $200 overnight, and they provide tents and other luxury accommodation.

The day we visited, a school group from Sydney's Western
suburbs had just departed by ferry, their clothing, sleeping bags etc. all collected en mass and delivered by this barge
to vehicles on shore...what a way to go!!
