The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is a Buddhist monument near Bendigo in central Victoria, Australia. The basic idea for building the stupa came from Lama Yeshe and then, after Lama Yeshe's death, from Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who decided to model the stupa on the Great Stupa of Gyantse which is 600 years old. A stupa (also known as a pagoda) is the most sacred building in Buddhism. A stupa symobolises the enlightened mind and the path of enlightenment. A stupa is also a reliquary to house holy relics of the Buddha and other highly realised beings. According to the official website:- "It rises to a total height of 48 metres above Bendigo’s distinctive bushland." (The Great Stupa website Home Page)
