            When 'Tulip Mania' hit Holland, tulip prices spiked crazily, bulbs flew out of markets, and gorgeous bi-colored tulips appeared in every garden. They also appeared in paintings by the Old Dutch Masters and some varieties were named after the most famous, like Rembrandt tulips - although Rembrandt purportedly didn't particularly like the type of tulip attributed to his name. 

So, what are Rembrandt tulips? They are bi-color tulips with a base color often red, pink, or purple, but they also had “flames” of secondary colors like white or yellow. They were extremely popular in Holland at that time, part of the reason for the speculative market bubble for these bulbs, known as 'Tulip Mania'.  Everyone was growing Rembrandt tulips and other bi-colored tulips. Nobody realized until much later though that the gorgeous broken colors in these tulips were not natural variations. Rather, they resulted from a virus, according to Rembrandt tulip plant information, a virus passed from plant to plant by aphids!

Just on the edge of the Melbourne Central Business District's formal grid of streets, you will find the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens.  A haven of green with avenues of elms, lush rolling lawns and beautiful seasonal plantings the gardens are populated with various buildings and points of interest.

In spring 2023 the gardeners of the Fitzroy Gardens excelled themselves with several annual and perennial borders in the area around the Model Tudor Village  Planted with beautiful pink petunias, pink lollipop primulas, cinerarias in pink, white, purple and blue and rows of pink tulips they are a roar of colour!  I have never seen these beds look so beautiful!  This is a section that consisted just of pink tulips and pink lollipop primulas.

The Fitzroy Gardens was named after Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy (1796-1858), Governor of New South Wales (1846-1851) and Governor-General of the Australian Colonies (1851-1855).  The Gardens have a long history of over 150 years, few other capital cities can boast such a significant garden so close to the City's centre. As crown land the City of Melbourne are the custodians to preserve and oversee this magnificent garden, visited by over 2 million local, interstate and international visitors each year, it is one of the major attractions in Melbourne.  It features many beautiful statues, a bandstand, the Temple of the Winds, a conservatory and Captain Cook's Cottage.
