Millennium Square (the newly designated space between the Winter Gardens and the Peace Gardens

Description:
9 polished stainless steel balls of different sizes, each set in a small pool. Water constantly flows over them to create a smooth, faintly rippled, surface. LED lights in the rim of the pools illuminate them at night. The largest ball is 2 metres high.

Commission:
Sheffield City Council. Part of the 'Heart of the City' regeneration scheme. Funding came from the Millennium Commission.
The first scultpures were installed on 25 November 2005
The square was formally opened on Saturday 18 March 2006 by Jan Wilson, Leader of Sheffield City Council. The ceremony was followed by 3 hours of street entertainment including music, theatre, juggling and stilt walkers.

Ball fountains in Sheffield.

Millennium Square is situated between two of Sheffield’s most popular public spaces, the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden, and was designed by architects Allies and Morrison.

Steel spheres

It contains a piece of public art called Rain, created by sculptor Colin Rose. The sculpture features nine large Sheffield stainless steel spheres varying in sizes up to 2m in diameter, which were intended to suggest drops of rain that have just landed on the surface of the square.

They sparkle at night due to dozens of colour changing LED lights set in the paving, and into the rim of the pools under each of the steel ball ‘raindrops’.
