The Chase - a photo on Flickriver

The Chase

            I had spotted a pair of Blue-winged Teal, a male and a female, when another mated pair of Blue-winged Teal arrived in the same area of the pond. The male of the arriving couple began chasing the male of the original pair until it flew away, shown in the top image here. It then began chasing the female of the original couple around and around in circles, seen in the bottom image, until she too flew away.

I'm not sure why this happened. Maybe the original pair had invaded a part of the waters that the arriving male felt was his. Or perhaps he had something else in mind, though from what I have read, non-monogamous behavior during the breeding season is rare among this species. In any case, it was interesting to observe.

BTW, it's the powder blue patch visible on the wing of the male in flight up top that gives the species its name.
