Lumpini Park,  one of Bangkok's largest and most beautiful  parks  also has an occupant who gives   it a feel  dating back to   the "Jurassic Era" .The "Giant Monitor Lizard" [varanus salvator] ranging from 6ft-11ft   is highly mobile in the klongs [ water ways ] that criss cross the142 acre park.They also come right up onto the grass  looking for food, never getting to far from the water.If need be they can stay under water for up to 1/2 hour before returning to the surface.
A Thai woman  sitting near by told me an old nick name for the lizard is "Tua Kin Kai", meaning "chicken eater". They are carnivores and can get defensive, attacking with their tail, claws and jaw.And if speed is what the lizard wants it can also run faster than a human. That;s how they catch their food.As for mating  the same  elderly  woman giggled and said" there is lots of biting and scratching !" Funny lady who spends a good portion of her time  in this park, as many others do too.

This is a no smoking park and is clear of street dogs. Not sure if the lizards keep the dogs out or not ? 
Water way this 7 foot lizard just came out of is  right behind me and full of many more just like him and larger.
