Timanfaya is a national park located on the island of Lanzarote, which is part of the Canary Islands, an autonomous community of Spain. The park is known for its unique and otherworldly landscape, featuring volcanic terrain and geological formations created by volcanic activity.
The park's formation is tied to a series of eruptions that occurred between 1730 and 1736, and then again in 1824. These eruptions dramatically altered the landscape of Lanzarote and created the distinct environment that is present in Timanfaya today.
Visitors to Timanfaya National Park can experience a stark and barren landscape characterized by solidified lava fields, volcanic cones, craters, and unique rock formations. The landscape is so captivatingly alien that it has been used as a filming location for various science fiction movies.
Because of the ongoing volcanic activity beneath the surface, visitors are not allowed to explore the park on their own. Instead, guided tours are available, and they typically include demonstrations showcasing the intense heat that still exists just below the surface. Park staff will pour water into boreholes, resulting in instant steam eruptions caused by the heat from the volcanic activity underneath.
Timanfaya's natural beauty and geological significance have made it a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in witnessing the aftermath of volcanic eruptions and learning about the geology of the Canary Islands.
