Les Pertes de L'Ain, Jura, France. - a photo on Flickriver

            Les Pertes de l’Ain in the Jura department in eastern France. The "pertes" refer to underground chasms or caves where the water from the river Ain flows down through a gorge and into them and then bursts out at this location in a 12-metre high waterfall.  The power of the water is harnessed by a hydro-electric power plant nearby. It was used to power forges back in the early 1900’s if my understanding is correct. Recent snowfalls which have been melting meant that the flow was very heavy, very loud and up close where you can see the steps on the right (zoom in), very exciting.
