Nederlands Indische Handelsbank Shanghai, 1930s

            Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) worked for Holland-China Trading Company (HCHC) in Shanghai, from 1939 to 1943. Two Dutch banks had branches in Shanghai and financed HCHC's activities: Nederlandsche Handel Maatschappij (NHM, Netherlands Trading Society) and Nederlandsch Indische Handelsbank (NIHB, Netherlands India Trade Bank). NIHB had a branch in Shanghai, from 1919 to 1951.

Mr. C.G. Riem worked for this bank. From his 1946 resume: "During 1921 and 1922 I worked temporarily with the Nederlandsch Indische Handelsbank N.V. in connection with certain plans which the head office of that bank had at the time in China. I left the service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1924 in order to definitely join the staff of the Nederlandsch Indische Handelsbank N.V. and worked successively in Batavia until November 1926, in Shanghai as an accountant until 1927, in Amoy as manager until 1928, and finally again in Shanghai as manager up to the present time, inclusive of a period of internment in a Japanese concentration camp in Shanghai from March 1943 until September 1945."

At the time, the building was situated at 45 Kiukiang Road, current address is 168 Jiujiang Road. Gunther Hartnagel wrote: 
"The most important German trading house was Carlowitz & Co. The building was constructed in the so-called Comprador-Style in 1898/99. Mr. Richard v. Carlowitz had arrived in 1844 in Asia. He founded his first company in Canton in 1846 and opened the Shanghai-branch in 1877. The property was confiscated in 1917."

Nederlandsche Verkoop Organisatie, a NIHB daughter company (importing distributor, manufacturer's agent) was also registered at this address, 45 Kiukiang Road.
