Cotton-top Mischief!! - a photo on Flickriver

These Cotton-top's have free run of the central exhibit space at Roger William Zoo's Tropical America exhibit. They run along ropes, branches (real and artificial) stairways and the Tree Porcupines net enclosure. They are terribly cute, and also a bit mischievious. They regularly chatter at and often buzz the two toed sloth, tease the hornbill and in gerneral find whtever trouble to be found. (My parents and wife might say they act bit like me?!)

The Cotton-Top Tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) is normally found only in Northwest Columbian rainforest and woodlands. They are extremely sensitive to habitat loss and alteration. One thing unique about the Cotton Top is that they are generlly though to be monogamous, but they employ a cooperative breeding system in which young adults remain with the family as breeding "helpers". Males woo mates by displaying their fatherly skills in courtship rituals of carrying the female's offspring around with them. This ability is valued by the females because they almost always give birth to twins.
