Cruiser Itsukushima firing gun - a photo on Flickriver

The Matsushima Class Cruisers were heavily armed with a massive 320mm CANET Gun which was capable of firing a powerful 450kg armour-piercing shell; both Hashidate and Itsukushima mounted this single gun turret forward, while Matsushima mounted the gun on the rear. However, this huge gun was too powerful for a ship with less than 4300 t making it roll tremendously when it was fired. To make this worse, it was extremely unreliable and had a awful rate of fire (theoretically: 2 rounds per hour!).

To compensate this, these ships were armed with between eleven to twelve Quick firing 120mm (4.7”) guns which were capable of firing twelve rounds per minute. A larger number of smaller 57mm and 47mm guns were also installed to provide increased defense against enemy torpedo-boats. Also, four 356mm torpedo tubes were mounted, with a total of 20 torpedoes.

The ships maximum speed was 16.5knots (which was hardly achieved in service) and had a maximum protection of 300mm on the main gun turret and 50mm on the main deck.
