Spanish Light Cruiser Navarra - 52 - a photo on Flickriver

Navarra was a Light cruiser that served the Spanish Navy from 1923 to 1956. Initially, it was named Reina Victoria Eugenia and was built in 1915 by Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval in Ferrol. Armed with nine 152mm guns, it was a small Cruiser with a maximum speed of 25,5 knots and a standard displacement of 5590tons.

In 1931, the ship was renamed Republica after the overthrown of King Alphonso XIII but because of the difficult economical situation of Spain, it was left deteriorating without guns or boilers at the harbor of Cadiz, plagued with a series of mechanical problems.
When the harbour fell on Nationalist hands in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, they decided to recover the ship.
