Barrow's Goldeneye Male 5708 - a photo on Flickriver

            I had posted the female earlier this morning and then Flickr crashed ... or we might have had an earthquake. Whatever, I intended to post the mating pair. This is the male Barrow's Goldeneye. I took over 100 shots of the hoards of goldeneyes that were in the melting Yellowstone Lake, and didn't stumble on this one until last night. I was looking for that elusive purple hue in the head feathers, and a shot that made the male look like the small sea duck that it is rather than a side shot where it looks like the size of a Crackling Goose (which it ain't by any means).

Yellowstone is on our agenda for next year since we were too late to get any kind of reservations for this September. Instead, we're headed for the high Sierras to rectify the limitations of the old SX10 and 20 from our last visits. I NEED better shots of the McGilvary's Warbler, Mountain Chickadee, and even the chipmunks that we passed along the way.
