Ganesha in Kumartuli, Kolkata, India.

            In Kumartuli, the traditional potter's quarter, where colourful idols of deities are made from clay and plaster. Colouful temporary structures called 'pandals' are erected on stages and in temples throughout the city and beyond, that draw huge crowds for the festivities. 
Here on the last days before Durga Puja, the biggest festival in Kolkata and nearby provinces, a completed sculpture is transported out of the narrow alleys of Kummartuli for distribution and assembly into often elaborate multi-figurine narratives upon reaching their destination. 
A porter,  probably the sculptor himself, holds onto a figurine of Ganesha to protect the somewhat fragile sculpture during the transport.
