Kushti wrestling practice, Varanasi, India

            Wrestlers in the training ground in an old part of Varanasi not far from Tulsi Ghat on the sacred river Ganga. 

This ancient Indian style of wrestling is called Kushti or Pehlwani, practiced in a ring or gym called Akhada, here Tulsi Akhada. The sport draws from Mughal and Persian wrestling cultures, as well as older styles mentioned in ancient Indian epics, such as the Ramayana. Hanuman, one of the heroes there, was a great wrestler himself.

This old traditional sport has become more popular again in recent years and men can come to fame throughout India with this sport. But many just practice fitness and worship, with prayers and blessings a normal part of every training and fight.
