Jungle temple, Angkor 2010

            The jungle temple, Ta Prohm in Angkor, Cambodia.

Shot on a modest Nikon D300, i.e. limited pixel quality but what a memory, and nice composition. How do you think?

Founded in the late 12th century, Ta Prohm was a temple city, a monastery and center of learning dedicated to the king's mother. Almost 80,000 people lived or visited the city for daily support and service, including over 2,700 officials and 615 dancers. For comparison, in the 13th century Paris became Europe's largest city with a similar population.
Imagine all the other Angkor sites in addition, with their own populations and surrounding fisheries and agriculture feeding the empire; with the much larger royal city of Angkor Thom only a km away.

The site fell into disuse after the gradual decline of the Khmer empire some 600-700 years ago, and the jungle reclaimed the site. Kapok and cotton wool trees finding an ideal space to grow giant, with light above and solid ground for massive roots developing in the stone structures built without mortar. The wooden houses surrounding the inner buildings have long since perished.

The site has been secured with few parts restored, but largely left as it was found since re-discovery some 150 years ago. Made famous through Angelina and the Tomb Raider film, it now draws ever larger numbers of tourists from all over the world.

What an incredible experience. i feel very lucky and privileged to have seen this, especially during rainy season as this shot here. Hope i can convey some of the magic for you.
