Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) Knight Inlet, BC

            This mama bear known as Lenore was taking a nap while her 3 ½ year old twins were munching alongside her. Female bears usually will give birth to one to three cubs every 3 to 4 years, and require a secure territory to raise them successfully. Typically the cubs at age 2-3 will leave their moms and go off on their own, but it appears that Lenore is a protective mama and has not set her cubs free yet.
Grizzlies are typically dark brown, though their fur can range from light cream to black and is often white tipped. Lenore and her twins are quite light which makes them easy to spot. 
The grizzly bear's claws are used mainly for digging and can be longer than a persons finger, compared to the black bears that have shorter, sharply curved claws usually less than 5cm (2 in) long adapted for climbing and tearing apart stumps etc.
