Swainson's Hawk - a photo on Flickriver

Swainson's Hawk

A juvenile light-phase Swainson's hawk, Buteo swainsoni, is eyeing a group of chukar partridge a few meters away, though I'm not so sure with intent to kill, as these hawks usually go for smaller prey. Taken in Bismarck, North Dakota, USA, in September.

An interesting fact about hawks is that hawks, eagles, and kites are all from the same family (falcons are not). "True hawks" are those members only from the subfamily Accipitrinae, and other than that, there is no taxonomic consistency to the term "hawk". In fact, many of what we call hawks in North America are technically buzzards (members of the genus Buteo, like this fellow) and not from the true hawk subfamily.
