N620US Northwest Orient Boeing 747-135 seen on push-back at London Gatwick

The Boeing Collection - a tribute to the Boeing 747 'Queen of the Skies'
From a collection of some 500 Boeing slides that I've had scanned from my archives. Hope they will provide some enjoyment and nostalgia from a bygone age.

After airline deregulation in the USA in 1978, a number of new airlines started to appear in the UK, adding some nice variety to the scene. Gatwick saw its fair share, and one of the airlines to arrive on the scene was Northwest Orient.

Seen on a murky morning at Gatwick - one of the original fleet of early build 747s N620US on push-back from the stand on flight NW45 - one of the two daily flights into Gatwick at the time. Tradewinds and Pelican Cargo Boeing 707 freighters can be seen in the distance, as well as a venerable Eastern DC-3 and Air UK Herald and BAC 1-11 :)

The aircraft was originally delivered to National Airlines in 1970, and was one of the early production 747s (production line no. 68).

N77772 c/n 19918 Boeing 747-135 was delivered new to National Airlines in Sep 1970 but only flew with the airline, along with sister ship N77771 for six years, before they were both replaced with DC-10s. The aircraft were both sold to Northwest Orient, with N77772 becoming N620US. It then flew with the airline for an impressive 19 years, only being withdrawn in 1995. It was finally broken up at Leflore County airport, Greenwood in 2000.
