Rare Heathrow visitor! HL7451 Korean Air Cargo Boeing 747-2B5F captured on runway 23 approach

From a collection of some 500 Boeing slides that I've had scanned from my archives. Hope they will provide some enjoyment and nostalgia from a bygone age.

Memories of Heathrow's original third runway - Runway 23
I was brought up in Southall in West London, just a few miles from Heathrow. Not only that, the house where I lived was right under the flight path of the cross-wind runway 23.

Rare visitor Korean Air Cargo Boeing 747-2B5F-SCD HL7451 is seen here over the outer marker on final approach to runway 23 at London Heathrow. A very rare shot - the only Korean Airlines visitor I saw at Heathrow in the original livery, and the only freighter - also unusual for runway 23 operations in 'blue sky' conditions :)

Whenever we had a nice stormy south-westerly wind, you would start to hear the familiar sound of approaching aircraft. As we were around 4 miles out, aircraft would call out over the outer-marker just as they flew over the house - I have some interesting recordings which combine the aircraft going over with the pilot calling on the radio.

At this time, the nearest I got to seeing a Korean Airlines aircraft was catching one of their DC-10s on KE902 at 30,000' on its way out of Paris CDG :) In the late 1980s, the airline started scheduled passenger operations into London Heathrow, but not sure exactly when - and by then the aircraft had adopted the later 'sky-blue' livery.

HL7451 c/n 22480 Boeing 747-2B5F - was originally delivered new to Korean Airlines as a pure freighter in June 1980, and flew with Korean for the next six years before being leased out to Saudia in May 1986. The aircraft returned to Korean Air in October 1989 and flew with them for another ten years before sadly being involved in a fatal accident on 22 Jan 1999 on departure from London Stansted - more info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Cargo_Flight_8509

Taken with a Soviet made ZenithTTL camera and 300mm lens. From an original slide, scanned with minimal restoration.

Annoyingly, I had loaded some inferior film rather than Kodachrome 64 which would have delivered much better colour saturation - this film was a tad grainy - probably Agfa - C'est la vie :)
